THE WORK OF RECEPTION
—The underground resourcefulness of the cabala
[flyer-set connection: 21-1]
If the spelling cabala is used here—different from the common spelling kabbalah—it is to help the reader to place herself adjacently to an esoteric tradition, and consider it from the view-points of modern and contemporary art. The flyer collection features as an art-reading (not a pop-reading).
BACKGROUND—When he worked for J.P. Sartre as a personal secretary, Pierre Victor (alias Benny Lévy) he introduced Sartre to Sefer Yetsirah (the Book of Creation): one of the major cabalistic texts. According, to Miquel Beltrán, Spinoza was heavily inspired by Abraham Herrera’s cabala. Yet, Benny Lévy declared: we MUST forget Spinoza.
If the way we distinguish between values eschews what we can know through identity and difference—because values are differences that make a difference—then knowledge based on experience and systems combined (i.e., ethics) with a handle on this can be of interest.
That is, the production and seduction of difference—with the power to identify our work at difference times—could be a way of thinking about provenance: because as we create, we change, and the accountability of that lateral drift is a tricky customer.
How to proceed and reflect from accountability in creative work, is an ethical challenge. Here accountability determines: 1) what can be conveyed in narrative; 2) what provides a leap of faith —engaged by creativity—with some foundation. The part-whole relation in creative process.
The flyers in this set—cabala #01-#06—can be browsed by clicking on the pdf files in the left row. They are better read and kept online. The reason for this is that their readability may hinge on their connectivity to other flyer-series: in this case the flyer series—form of knowledge #01-#06.
