| dc.description.abstract | History never repeats, but sometimes a comparison of two events, separated by decades, discloses remarkable similarities: the falling apart of a society along cultural divides, mobilization of the past in current struggles, the promise of European integration and irreversibility of violent transformations. What Giorgio Agamben argued about the dissolution of Yugoslavia seems to fully apply to what is taking place today in Ukraine: there will never be a return to normality and restoration of the old social contract. Instead, a violently created state of exception will turn into a permanent condition and even spread all over the globe. Was the Post-Communism dead before it was born?
Boris Buden is a writer and cultural critic based in Berlin. He received his PhD in Cultural Theory from the Humboldt University in Berlin. In the 1990s he was the editor of the magazine Arkzin in Zagreb. His essays and articles cover the topics of philosophy, politics, cultural and art criticism. Buden is a permanent fellow at the European Institute for Progressive Cultural Policies in Vienna and he teaches cultural theory at the Faculty of Art and Design, Bauhaus University, Weimar. Buden is co-editor and author of several books, including «Der Schacht von Babel» (The Pit of Babel), Berlin (2004) and «Zone des Übergangs» (The Zone of Transition. On the End of Post-Communism), Frankfurt am Main (2009).

Historien gjentar seg aldri, men noen ganger kan sammenlikningen av to uavhengige hendelser vise påfallende likheter: et samfunn som faller fra hverandre på grunn av kulturelle skiller, bruk av gamle ideer som løsning på nåtidens konflikter, løftet om europeisk integrering og irreversible voldelige transformasjoner. Giorgio Agambens tanker om Jugoslavias oppløsning er fullt overførbare på dagens situasjon i Ukraina: full normalitet og gamle sosiale kontrakter vil aldri gjenopprettes.
